Naturals and Organics at Oota From Your Thota

Don’t fret if you missed the annual Oota From Your Thota fair in north Bangalore. The threat of rains kept thousands indoors like you but here is a round-up of the event in all its day-long glory.

What is drawing Bangaloreans to such fairs is the awareness quotient of switching over to a lifestyle of having safe and fresh food, stock up on organics, the latest green trends and making an effort to grow them in their own backyard.

The annual event conducted by Oota from Your Thota on November 29 was held this year at Vyasa International School in Vidyaranyapura. It drew a sizeable crowd of all ages – from parents, grandparents to children. And, on display this year was organic jaggery, bamboo rice, millet bath, terrace gardening methods and interesting organic products including face washes made from cow by-products.

At the Buvi Naturals’ stall, Harish enthusiastically explains to customers that they could grow in their own home palak, beans, carrot, brinjal and other fruits and vegetables for which the company sold small seed packets priced between Rs 15-25. Some visitors were enquiring about natural herbicides Poochimarandu and Panchagavya which can kill pests and help the plants grow healthy. Panchagavya is made up of a mixture of cow dung, urine, milke, ghee, curd, jaggery, banana, tender coconut and water.

Organic Mandya, which is making waves in Bangalore with its organically grown farm products were selling liquid jiggery, what they called bucket jaggery as well as flax seeds. Organic Mandya is promoted by an association of organic farmers in Mandya. Their products are available online on www.organicmandya.com and will be delivered at your doorstep. You can also visit their store in Mandya enroute to Mysore. Every Sunday, Organic Mandya also organises a camp where participants can work along with farmers and take a tour of their fields. The live experience is topped with a native wholesome meal.

Muddywater design products with their unique miniature garden products drew crowds that were happy to buy various mini green products from their stall. You can visit their page www.facebook.com/MuddyWatersDesign for more details.

While the cow is in sharp focus nowadays, an interesting stall was put up by Desi Cows for Better India Trust. The trust, based in Jakkur, has been promoting cow products such as A2 Non-toxic phenyl made from neem and cow urine, lip balm made from pure desi cow ghee, organic bee wax and facewash made of marigold, saffron and ghee. Organisers claim pure distilled cow urine bottled by them are known to fight cancer. More information can be had from www.desicow.org.

There were also visitors such as Soumya from Malleswaram hunting for pure organic turmeric which she prefers after reading in the newspapers about turmeric also being mixed with impurities to add more weight and colour to nature’s best natural fighter.
