Columbia Asia Cathlab for heart emergency

Bangalore: Columbia Asia Hospital in Hebbal has given the term golden hour in a cardiac emergency a full new meaning with the introduction of a state-of-the-art catheterization laboratory or Cathlab as it is commonly called.

Columbia Asia Hebbal Cathlab
The Cathlab is an imaging tool used to visualize arteries and chambers of the heart to enable doctors to diagnose and treat any narrowing or abnormality in blood vessels of patients wheeled in during emergencies and gives them greater chances of survival.

In a busy hub such as North Bangalore, with IT Parks and residential complexes, accessing diagnostic and treatment services for heart attack victims within the golden hour is a major issue as most hospitals in the area are mainly referral hospitals where patients are stabilised and later shifted to lager super-speciality hospitals in other parts of the city.

``A growing number of young people, many of them below 40, are being affected with cardiovascular diseases. It is vital to provide medical attention to patients who suffer cardiac arrest within the first hour or what is called the ``golden hour’’,’’ says Dr Nandakumar Jairam, Group Medical director, Columbia Asia Hospitals.

The unique feature of the new Cathlab at Columbia Asia Hospital Hebbal is that this latest technology has made it possible to reduce the radiation exposure by 83% for patients and by 70% for its staff, says Dr Prashanth, the hospital General Manager.
