Godrej residents, BBMP clean and green road

For years now, this electric transformer next to Amruthahalli police station near Godrej Apartments was the favourite roadside garbage dumping ground. A notice board put up by the BBMP too had little effect as every day one could find thousands of plastic covers strewn around.

The rotting garbage has been attracting stray dogs and cows even as it gave out a permanent unbearable stench.

All this changed on Earth Day, April 22, when the nearby Godrej Woodsman Estate residents and the BBMP came together to clear the area and beautify the ugly spot.

BBMP Yelahanka Joint Commissioner Sarfaraz Khan got the entire roadside and adjacent land cleared of the filth while Godrej residents planted saplings which the BBMP fenced.

An apartment resident and management committee member said: ``In our bid to contribute to our immediate surroundings, TeamGreen Godrej Woodsman Estate Apartment Owners Association in collaboration with BBMP has adopted this stretch of road leading to the local police station.’’

An active TeamGreen member said the apartment residents, who are known to strictly adopt exemplary Solid Waste Management practices inside their campus, decided it was time to extend conservation efforts to the surrounding neighbourhood and planted fruit and flowering trees on the stretch.

Now, the road has been widened, trees planted and a board put up to warn people not to throw garbage.

For the past three weeks, the area has remained clean and green. A policeman said they have requested Bescom to replace the fused streetlights. ``As the road is unlit, hundreds of people take advantage of the darkness and throw garbage here at night.’’

This has also come as a relief to the pourakarmikas as this particular spot was a nightmare for them.
