Spotting Slender Loris in their natural habitat

They are tiny, cute, slow moving creatures who prefer the safety of tall trees. And, these nocturnal creatures prefer to venture out only at night as they find sunlight unbearable.

Found only in this part of Asia (mainly south India and Sri Lanka), Slender Loris thrive in their natural habitats around Bangalore. Called kaadu papa, the loris are shy creatures that are now on the endangered list.
Slender Loris
Slender loris (Loris Tardigradus Malabaricus) are one of the smallest of primates. They have long and thin pencil like arms and legs and saucer-shaped eyes, all perfect for a cuddle. But, they are not to be touched, only seen. In that way, Bangaloreans are lucky as there are many loris habitats close to the city.

One such place is Nagavalli village near Tumkur, 85 km from Bangalore. Villagers themselves here have taken the lead to protect these animals, which grow to a height of just ten inches and stand upright.

Nagavalli’s villagers were first made aware that they are an endangered species under Schedule I of the Wildlife Act by a school teacher B.V. Gundappa.

Gundappa says the villagers are always on vigil driving away poachers and strangers from their fields. The conservationist says these omnivores that feed on fruits, berries, lizards and other insects are in danger themselves due to their shrinking habitats as well as they are falling prey to poachers who turn them over to black magic performers.

Many a time, villagers have found these animals on the ground struggling for life after they have been pierced by all kinds of sharp objects.

This is a part of a new series by North Bangalorepost. We will henceforth take readers on a journey full of adventure and connect them with activities such as outdoor sports, bird watching, loris spotting and other exciting activities. Keep a watch for such tours and weekend getaways.
