How safe is north Bangalore during rains?

Brace for heavy rains is the prediction this week. In north Bangalore too, the weatherman has predicted a steady downpour for the next couple of days.

But the area is more lucky in terms of damage caused by rain as it has not resulted in flooding, overflowing drains, tree fall causing damage and loss to lives and property like in other areas of the city.

While clogging traffic has become an issue, the good news is that the water bodies in the area such as Hebbal lake, Nagawara tank, Jakkur lake, Rachenahalli lake, Allalasandra lake and others are getting filled up. Even the dry Amruthahalli lake, where development work is underway, is slowly getting filled up in patches.

BBMP officials say the number of complaints received at the office of the Joint Commissioner (Yelahanka) is comparatively less than other parts of the city.

“The complaints mainly relate to mosquito menace for which spraying is being done in all localities and shoulder drain work reducing the size of the Amruthahalli main road. On the positive side, we have completed road work on the Outer Ring Road-Nagawara intersection near Karle within a week. We are trying to minimise difficulties for the public,’’ a BBMP officer said.

If North Bangalorepost readers have grievances they can write to northbangalorepost@gmail.com and we will have them addressed by the respective ward corporators and BBMP officers.

Sahakarnagar has seen a fresh coat of tar on many of its main roads which has reduced the problem of slow movement of traffic reported earlier due to the bad state of roads.

Though the number of complaints may be less, this does not mean residents of north Bangalore do not have complaints.

In Amrut Nagar and Coffee Board layouts, residents have connected their sewerage lines to the newly laid BWSSB sewage network which has resulted in backflow into houses as well as overflowing manholes as the network of underground pipes has no outlet.

Parking has become a huge problem on all the main roads of residential areas including Yelahanka New Town, Hebbal-Kempapura, Dasarahalli main road, Sahakarnagar, Kodigehalli and other areas.

The parking of large vehicles atop Hennur underpass, including BMTC buses overnight, has become a cause for concern. Chitra P, a resident fears the Hennur underpass may get weakened due to the constant of parking of heavy vehicles on it. ``The traffic police have to regulate this,’’ she feels.

Of course, while many infrastructure projects are being planned, dangers lurk around it – the unsafe pedestrian crossing near Manyata Techpark due to the foot overbridge work in progress and the road widening between Esteem Mall and Hebbal flyover loop are examples of how unsafe it is for both road-users and pedestrians.
