On Environment Day, the minister stressed on the importance to start a campaign to plant trees as the world’s climate is reaching a dangerous state.

He pointed out that global warming has become a very serious issue which has resulted in increased flooding, drought and extreme temperatures that affect agricultural output as well as citizen’s health.

The government, along with the BBMP forest wing and Mr Gowda’s office has started a green initiative to plant saplings in and around north Bangalore and Byatarayanapura Assembly constituency.

Saplings such as honge, mohogony, bevu, tububeae, nerale, jacaranda, amla and other species are being planted.

The soil work, digging, excavation, marking and refilling of pits, distribution of saplings and tree guards will be done by the BBMP forest wing.

All residents and Resident Welfare Associations have been asked to come up with their requirement of saplings to plant in their localities, lake fronts as well as parks. Trees help to reduce storm water run-off, provide shade and shelter and fights global warming. In addition, fruit, fodder and forest produce grows on trees which also acts as a carbon sink. Trees also help prevent soil erosion, reduce noise pollution, improve water quality, lower air temperature, induce rainfall and remove soot from the air.

"The Government of Karnataka is very concerned about this situation and has begun this initiative to encourage more Bangaloreans to plant more and more trees. We believe it is the responsibility of every global citizen to act as a guardian of our living environment. So, we have decided to continue this programme as a positive local action to enable everyone to contribute in reducing global warming," Mr Gowda said.
