Enamoured with European-style cafes and their artisan breads? Here is one in north Bangalore, in your own backyard. The wide international selection, flavour, crust, texture and even the décor - everything about Breadworks Boulangerie is distinctly European.
At Breadworks Boulangerie, bread-making is their passion. The café and its products are popular among expats, NRI’s and Indians who have worked abroad and returned back to their roots.
Breadworks Boulongerie is on Sahakarnagar main road with outdoor garden-style seating while the café itself is well stocked. The seating area is covered from the elements and walled off from the busy street ensuring quiet moments.
Cherian Philip started Breadworks under the guidance of master chef and baker Maurice Chaplais. Having travelled frequently to France and Germany, he fell in love with the charming cafes and cobbled-street boulangeries. He felt as Bangalore became a global city, time was ripe to start such cafes offering international food and beverages.
The same passion continues to drive him, enabling Breadworks’ to maintain the high standards of quality.
The slow artisan European method of breadmaking here has a 100-year legacy in Europe’s cafes. At the factory, most breads are baked carefully in European stone-lined ovens, without any yeasts, fats or preservatives. To raise the breads naturally, home-made culture, or Levain, made from wild yeasts present in Alphonso mangoes are used. The flour is milled ensuring it is free from chemicals and preservatives.
"All these make our breads freshly baked, old world country breads. We also serve and stock a wide variety of baking products," says Swetcha Reddy, who looks after the Sahakarnagar café.
"The equipment used at our Doddaballapur bakery is from the UK. Such machinery cannot be found anywhere else in the city. Our chefs are trained by the master chefs and supplies arrive everyday at all the outlets,"she says emphasising on the freshness.
The artisan breads available here are not available elsewhere in the city. Among popular ones are sour dough, multi grain, whole wheat, baps or sandwich bread, baguettes, Panini, Ciabatta, Challah, Apple walnut raisin, Brioche and much more.
Breadworks Boulangerie recently participated at a fest in UB City where they showcased their breads and paired them with wine and cheese.
Reddy says in a small step to reach out to more customers across the city, Breadworks' will make its products available at select retail supermarkets where par-baked breads will be available. These are not fully baked and chilled to -16 degrees celsius and can be ready to eat once put in the oven.
The café also serves pizzas, burgers, pastries, a selection of hot and cold beverages and stocks Danish raisins, granola bars, healthy pizza bases, artisan bread crumbs with Italian herbs, organic eggs, imported cheese, speciality condiments and a variety of packed products. It is open from 9 am till 9 pm.
Breadworks Boulangerie also has a café in Indiranagar and a members-only outlet at the Bangalore Golf Club. Recently, they opened an exclusive outlet at Raheja Pebble Bay, RMV second stage, off Hebbal-BEL stretch of the Outer Ring Road.
