Receding hairline a cause of worry in Men

Human hair represents an important symbol of power, beauty and an indication of a person’s general health.

It is widely believed that hair shapes one’s beliefs, personality, culture and even an air of confidence.

Through ancient times and cultures, human beings have placed hair, it's care and grooming at the highest levels of priority and rightly so. Today, it has become a multi-million dollar industry across the world.

Its health and appearance matters to both women and men alike, so when there are instances of hair loss, thinning, a receding hair line – all this causes a great deal of anguish and agony. A problem large enough to tear one’s hair, literally speaking.

Dr Tina Ramachander, consulting dermatologist in north Bangalore says there are many causes for hair thinning among women and a receding hairline among men. Of course, both sexes can have these problems too.

There are many types of hair loss:
  • Hair fall with altered scalp texture, that is, a scarring type of hair loss.
  • Hair fall with scalp texture being normal or a non-scarring type of hair loss.
  • Diffused hair loss which could happen post birth mainly, after medicine intake of antibiotics and hormonal supplements and hair shaft defects.
  • There could be a patchy hair loss too due to fungal, bacterial or viral infections and a common variety which is called alopecia areata, which is having a well defined coin-sized complete loss of hair loss,'' says Dr.Tina.
Dermatologists regularly encounter male-pattern baldness. The first few signs of this will be a thinning of hair, active hair fall and a rapidly receding hair line.

There is a definite possibility to retain and also grow new hair in such cases.

Dr.Tina says this kind of hair problem needs life-long treatment and patients should understand the cause and have a commitment towards application to achieve  the required results.

The requirement of Platelet Rich Plasma rejuvenation or PRP treatment, Mesotherapy, Diode laser, hair transplants is subjective to the stage of hair loss and the expected outcome should be understood with proper counselling sessions as extreme cases may require extreme measures,’’ says the doctor.

General hair loss is the second most commonly encountered hair fall problem. This is drastic in nature and people will witness their hair all over – on floors, pillows, combs and in the bathroom.

This can be easily treated by doctors once the cause is ascertained. It could vary from person to person and can be due to a variety of factors such as nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, stressful lifestyles, medicine intake, crash dieting, weight loss and gain, child birth are the common causes.

Dr.Tina says multivitamins and prescribed scalp applications can get relief from this within two-three months.

Hair fall and the anxiety associated with it is high. The choice of treatment should be scientific, logical and rational. Anyone claiming immediate cures and quick fixes should not lure a patient into taking hasty decisions, warns the doctor.

This is especially true as the `hair loss’ industry is large and non- qualified personnel offer all kinds of treatments.

As hair is a person’s crowning glory, a loss of it should not necessarily lead to loss of self-esteem. Ask specialists the right questions, discuss, understand and decide what is best for your hair and its health, says Dr.Tina.
