Drawing a peacock with her feet

Noted danseuse, Anuradha Vikranth, is attempting a first for a Bharatanatyam artiste – drawing a peacock on canvas as she dances.

Called the Mayura Sandesha, the dancer of international repute will be performing Chitra Nirupana at her school, Drishti’s 12th National Dance Festival, on January 21 at Chowdiah Memorial Hall.

The artiste explained that a canvas would be laid out on stage and as she performs she will draw a peacock with her feet. It is certainly a tough task as she would be using colours too and once done, the canvas would be lifted for the audience to see.

The dance narrative elucidates the longing of Valli, a tribal heroine, for her beloved hero, Skanda. Valli chooses the peacock as her messenger. The concept and direction for this Mayura Sandesha is by her guru Dr Veena Murthy Vijay and choreographed and presented by Anuradha.

Lyrics for this special performance has been penned by noted scholar Shatavadhani Dr R Ganesh and the music scored by well known composer Praveen D. Rao.

The others performing at the festival are Natya and STEM Dance Kampni who will present Aakash, a contemporary aerial act inspired by distinctness, union and collision. The aerial choreography, anchored by Madhu Nataraj, creates a unique mosaic of images.

A Mohiniattam performance titled Lasya Mohana will be performed by Gopika Varma and her ensemble. Drishti Dance Ensemble will present Arpana, a Bharatanatyam recital.

On the occasion Guru Padmini Ravi and Guru Bala Devi Chandrashekar, from the US, will be felicitated with “Drishti Puraskar” for their contribution to the field of dance.

The entry is open to all the art lovers.
