Fair, pretty, handsome and disturbing

Fairness is a term which is often used and misused. The term "Fairer the better" is a colonial hangover. We have come to associate it with improved marriage alliances, job opportunities, success et al.

As a dermatologist, its disturbing to read fairness advertising.

Somewhere down the line, the race to get fair percolates form the person to people around and then ensues a number of different tried and tested methods to acquire "that fair skin".

As a dermatologist, I get to meet patients who seek more out of their skin routines or skin types. But, in these times, it is very important to be aware of the correct knowledge so that it empowers one to take decisions that are best for your skin and its health.

In fact, having brown skin is a blessing as it acts as a protective shield against harmful UV rays we get exposed to everyday.

According to a study, incidence of skin cancers in those with brown and black skin compared to those with white skin is lesser because of the protective properties of melanin or the pigment causing brown color.

When exposed to the sun, the ultraviolet radiation causes damage to the DNA and melanin or brown pigment is produced to repair this damage, in case of excessive exposure, more melanin is produced by the body for damage control. resulting in darkening of skin or tanning. So this tan that we are complaining about is our body protecting us.

But, in the quest for brightening our skin, over-the-counter creams containing steroids, hydroquinone and other dangerous mixtures can cause more damage than make one look fairer.

One should remember that creams are like double-edged swords. So the question that needs to be asked is: "With quick result creams that help me become fairer, am i damaging my skin in the long term?"

The side effects of such creams are damage like thinner skin, sensitivity and irritability when out in the sun, new pimples, darker dry patches, hair growth in areas where it was applied and long term absorption into the system.

So, its time to celebrate and reward our skin. Take care of it with a wholesome healthy lifestyle, great eating habits, lesser stress levels, lesser time with gadgets, time out with family, applying protective creams according to the skin type, weather and surrounding conditions.

After all, our skin is like a mirror reflecting our culture, lifestyle and legacies. Let's own it and be proud of it.
