How to protect your skin as school year begins

It’s a brand new year and its back to school for students. But, their immediate concern is: My skin looked so good during the holidays, but now there is more acne, more dandruff, lice, sun damage etc.

All these thoughts coming true and are common and it is due to changes in routine. So how do school kids take care of their skin?

Dr Tina Ramachander, a leading dermatologist in north Bangalore, has a few tips:
  • Plan the day ahead, pack a healthy lunch box.
  • Snack on whole food groups such as eggs, nuts, fruits as home-made nutritious boxes are the best.
  • Avoid biscuits, white breads, jams, sauces.
  • Splash water on your face during breaks.
  • As children need the sun to develop healthy bones, if you sense any sensitivity to the sun, use pediatric sunscreen.
  • Use a mild moisturizer according to your skin type.

There are a few tips for parents too. They should educate kids on skin care. Though it can be quite taxing for parents with teens, having acne, peer pressure and social media add to it. Give them the scientific understanding for acne and tips on how to deal with it. And, do not hesitate to counsel if your child is too distracted with the skin issue. The best course of action is to seek treatment.

In case of a lice attack, alert school authorities and use shampoos prescribed by doctors as often they encounter resistance from these pests.

Children who swim regularly have to hydrate using moisturizer; use sunscreens and reuse sunscreens post swimming. Remember, the UV in water is quite high and we can't completely protect ourselves even with the best of measures.

The new school year can be so much more enjoyable when we plan and educate kids about the many little ways to lead a healthy lifestyle. This goes a long way as their focus should remain on academics rather than worry about small little things that a parent or a doctor can help them with.
