Saddle up on horse power

For those interested in an activity that will rev them up this summer, we suggest horse power of a different kind. Learn horse riding at Bangalore Horse Riding School in Jakkur.

Horse riding is the best leisure activity for the body and mind. BHRS is organising summer camps where entry is for those above seven-years-of-age and below 80 kgs of body weight.
“Horse riding teaches discipline. There are health benefits too. It increases confidence, balance, discipline, body posture and is a great stress buster,” says Navneet Raj. He runs the camp along with his wife, Deepa Lakshmi  in north Bangalore. The camp is easy to locate – go alongside Jakkur lake on the road that connects Kogilu.
The Bangalore Horse Riding School gives one an experience of owning a horse as the one-week camp activity includes feeding horses, grooming them, stable management, exercising the animals as well as learning to saddle up. Horse riding is all about sharing a bond between the man and animal.
“This activity has no age or gender barrier and it is good for posture too. Riding gives people focus. It helps overcome aggression and fear too,” adds Deepa.
Campers are taught all this and riding for six days at Jakkur and on Sunday, they are taken to the foothills of Nandi betta to ride at the sports village. The cost for the whole week is Rs 8,000 per person. Kids who attend the camp have an extended session of painting too.
The school, owing allegiance to the British Horse Riding Society style, stresses on promoting indigenous horse breeds such as Marwari and Katyavari horses. These are sturdy horses. There are also some former race horses that size you up apart from the farm housing some German studs that are stabled here by race horse owners.
Navneet says BHRS was born out of a desire to provide affordable riding sessions to all groups. Horseback riding does not demand athletic aptitude. It is an activity where learning never stops.
Navneeth and Deepa also participate in equestrian events such as tent pegging, show jumping and dressage events and those interested can graduate to the next level at the school.
The activity is safe as there are assistants at hand and the training is on tamed and trained horses. Its also within a closed arena.
Interestingly, those holidaying in Uttarkhand, Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh this year can take a few lessons here at the school on safety tips and on preventive measures as they are likely to encounter unprofessional horse agents and ill-trained animals at these tourist spots. A separate session will be organised on request.
