Coming soon: An eye speciality within a multi-speciality hospital

For some years now, quality eye care has moved out of multi-specialty hospitals across the city.

The limited eye care facilities in north Bangalore has prompted Aster CMI Hospital on International Airport Road, Sahakaranagar to set up a comprehensive ophthalmology centre on its premises.

“Aster is filling up this gap by delivering personalized eye care. We are setting up an advanced eye unit backed by very senior doctors in the field of Ophthalmology. The full-fledged centre will take care of all age groups – from “children to adults” which will also include specialized care of patients with diabetes and hypertension,’’ says Dr Nitish Shetty, CEO, Aster CMI Hospital.

Aster is a well-known brand under DM Health care, which operates a chain of super-specialty hospitals and medical centres in Gulf countries and in India. In Bangalore, Aster CMI is the brand’s first hospital.

Among the plans, says Dr Rajani Battu, head of the department of Ophthalmology is that Aster is setting up a well-equipped pediatric ophthalmology unit. This unit is needed as there are more and more children with refractive errors and other problems needing to see eye specialists.

“Children rarely complain about their sight, but often show in their behavior that there may be a problem with their vision. This can include sitting too close to the TV, rubbing their eyes a lot, holding objects very close to the face, blinking a lot or one eye turning either in or out. If you think your child is experiencing any sort of sight problems, take them to ophthalmologist for a check-up as soon as possible. The earlier eye problems are picked up, the better. Eye examinations do not hurt. ’’

“A child needs a minimum of 3-4 examinations before the age of 5 years! The first is within a week or 10 days of birth, the second would be within 6-8 months of age, the third between 2 and 3 years of age and at least one more examination before the age of 5”, says Dr. Ravindra Battu, senior consultant and Pediatric Ophthalmologist.  This is of utmost importance especially if there is a history of prematurity, or lazy eyes.

Computer Vision Syndrome, also referred to as Digital Eye Strain, describes a group of eye and vision-related problems that result from prolonged computer, tablet, e-reader and cell phone use. Many individuals experience eye discomfort when viewing digital screens for extended periods. Uncorrected vision problems can increase the severity of Computer Vision Syndrome or Digital Eye Strain symptoms.

“Some eye diseases such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy have no symptoms in their early stages, so you may not know you have a problem until advanced stages of the disease. This can make treatment very difficult and the problem harder to manage. Thus, regular eye examinations are essential for early diagnosis and treatment of any problems that may crop up. Early detection and treatment can slow down or even reverse the progression of diabetic eye disease” says Dr. Rajani Battu.

Currently, Aster eye care services provides various surgical facilities including phacoemulsification with foldable lens implantation both for adults as well as for childhood cataracts, glaucoma surgeries, squint surgeries, management of retinal conditions including diabetic eye disease and various orbit and oculoplasty procedures. Very soon Aster is coming up with a full-fledged vitreoretina services.

Eye care is something that is often neglected, as we grow older. A person’s eye is the mirror of one’s health – a fact that is often forgotten. Eye problems in middle age may start in the form of being unable to read the day’s newspaper clearly or when they find the glare of oncoming headlights too much to bear with. A regular eye check as we age is an essential part of a complete health check.
