Kitchen waste to kitchen table cycle

Before you throw leftover food into the waste bin, think twice. This can turn into high quality organic plant food that enables you to grow your own veggies and fruits at home!
Organic Vegetables grown on rooftop
There are many ways to grow compost at home and small living spaces are not a constraint. And, rooftop composting does not require that much space.

It does not exactly have to be on the roof but in your balcony or a similar space and is quite hassle-free if done right. Once completed, it could become the foundation for your very own garden, says Arijit Mitra from GreenTech Life.

Segregation education:

The next step is much the same as those infographics floating across the city and peppering any ‘Go green’ campaign. You segregate your waste into three categories - wet (food waste) and dry (anything that is recyclable) and rejects (sanitary napkins, diapers, etc). Most of us could probably recite off-hand what goes into each category.

Educating yourself along the way is key to your success.  Scour the city for related workshops such as the ‘Grow Your Own Vegetables On Your Own Rooftops’ that is being conducted by the Karnataka Government’s Department of Horticulture in collaboration with Residents’ Welfare Associations.

Smart compost:

Settle on a composting process as this will decide what composting equipment and agent you will need, as well as what material is used. Smart bins, which are easily available off and online, can accommodate just about any waste. However, non-veg material is best to be avoided in traditional composting methods, advises Mitra.

The equipment could be bins or holes dug in your garden. Get your agents or microbes such as bio-bloom,  which will help breakdown the compost matter. (For details visit www.greentechlife.com) Once you have it all settled in the container, take a step back and wait for nature to take its course.

Does it pass the smell test?

If you are worried about odour issues then keep in mind when done correctly, there will be no foul smell.
