Kitchen and Terrace Gardening awareness workshop |
An initiative by Agriculture Minister and Byatarayanapura MLA Krishna Byre Gowda, the residents were given a garden kit worth Rs 200 each comprising a plastic pot holder, a gardening shovel, three seed packets and compost soil.
The Horticulture department has been encouraging residents to grow their own vegetables and fruits by converting their household wet waste into compost. Department officials who spoke said residents staying in both individual houses or apartments can create their own garden patch be it in their compound, terrace or balcony.
Mrs.Meenakshi Krishna Byregowda addressing gathering at workshop |
"Dry and rejected waste can be given away for clearance, while wet waste can be used to grow compost at common areas".
She also asked households who will get three bins each from the RWA (to segregate dry, wet and rejected waste soon) not to put the bins for some other use such as storing food grains as they were expensive and cost nearly Rs 1,000 per set.
Devaraj Gowda, the RWA president pointed out that if the waste was not segregated at the household level, the same was being dumped at Mandur and other land fill sites by BBMP which has angered villagers who are now blocking trucks carrying unsegregated waste.
North Bangalorepost has been running a special feature ‘Join Hands 2 Compost’ on composting in North Bangalore encouraging residents and communities in north Bangalore to segregate waste and compost wet waste.
